MST3K: Episode 419 - The Rebel Set

I'm watching all of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episodes in order. More about that here and here.

Episode 419: The Rebel Set

First aired: Comedy Central on 12 December 1992
Availability:
iTunes, Amazon Instant Video, Amazon (Volume 12), Rhino (Volume 12), Best Brains (Volume 12)

The Beatniks.
Here's another one I never saw when the show aired, but have seen multiple times since. I have the iTunes download and the Volume 12 4-pack.

It's a gangster movie that takes place in a beat joint.

Remember how in Episode 415: The Beatniks there were a bunch of rebels who weren't beatniks? Well, this one has more beatniks and fewer rebels than that one.

Of course, the crew that pulls off the robbery isn't exactly a bunch of beatniks, but they do hang out with them. In the first part of the movie, anyway.

Let's go over the plot so we don't all get lost.
BeatniksExplaining the plot
The Chief of CONTROL owns a beatnik-infested coffee house so he decides to rob an armored car and hires a bunch of no-talent bums to commit the robbery during a 4-hour train layover in Chicago, then dresses up as a priest and starts killing the other robbers before he gets killed by the hero who then goes to jail. The end.

Johnny at the Fair
Got it? Good. That's it. That's the whole movie.

Since the movie isn't a long film, Dr. Forrester was kind enough to send a short feature up to Joel & the Bots. In it, a kid gets lost at the fair in Canada. But he finds Joe Louis, a horse, and a scary-looking lady on a trampoline, so there's that.

One of my favorite entries in the Invention Exchange was featured: Frank's Quick Primp Kit. I fully expect someone to find a way to make that happen. Probably with similar results.

Oh, and everybody but Tom seems to think the conductor in the movie is played by Merritt Stone. Tom is correct, although they are still wondering just who IS Merritt Stone, anyway.
Primpin'Merritt Stone (R) is not in this film
Remember Episode 313: Earth vs the Spider? He was the dad who was eaten up by the spider early on. Remember Episode 411: The Magic Sword? He was the king who looked like Grady from Sanford and Son. That's who Merritt Stone is. He's not in this film.

It could have used a little Merritt Stone.
