Miss Columbus Outstanding Teen 2009

Last Saturday night, my niece — the daughter of my middle sister, the Mean One — competed in the Miss Columbus Outstanding Teen pageant.

And she won!

I’m quite proud of my little niece. Only, she’s not so little. Except in my mind.

There were three pageants in one: Miss Columbus, Miss Columbus Outstanding Teen, and Miss Southern Rivers Outstanding Teen.

My little niece had some tough competition from those other teens. There was some serious talent on the stage that night. But she won!

We’re so proud of her.

Catfish sweep Hagerstown

Stephen Vogt scores game-winning run
Stephen Vogt greeted at home plate following his game-winning, 10th-inning homer.

For 9-1/2 innings, the Columbus Catfish were either behind or tied with the Hagerstown Suns (Nationals).

But in the bottom of the 9th, C Stephen Vogt gave the Catfish their first lead when he blasted the game-winning home run over the clubhouse roof beyond right field.

The 5-4 gave the Catfish a sweep of Hagerstown, their 4th win in a row, and their 13th win in 17 games.

Catfish beat Hagerstown again

Stephen Vogt races across home plate after homering against Hagerstown.

The Columbus Catfish are ending the season on a roll.

They won their 12th game in 16 tries this evening, beating the Hagerstown Suns (Nationals), 3-0. It’s their 3rd in the series with Hagerstown. A win Monday gives the Catfish a 4-game sweep.

Miss Columbus contestants
My niece … and other young ladies from across Georgia … onstage in Columbus, competing in the Miss Columbus, Miss Columbus teen, and Miss Southern Rivers teen pageants. Image: WTVM

This weekend, my niece competed in the Miss Columbus teen pageant. Did well. Very well.

They don’t live around here. They still live in southeast Georgia, and it’s a long story about how she came to compete in the teen portion of the Miss Columbus pageant.

She’s the daughter of the middle sister, the Mean One.

She’s got a lot of her mother in her. Her sense of humor, at least.

And that’s key.

When we got together Friday afternoon, after they got to Columbus, and started catching up. And, like always, the conversation went all over the place. Maybe you know how it is: one thing reminds you of something else, and that reminds someone of something else, and so on and so on…

And somewhere along the way, the subject of Carol Burnett or Tim Conway came up. Probably talk about vacations, which led to Las Vegas, which led to The Wife and I seeing Tim Conway and Harvey Korman there a few years ago, which led to the Carol Burnett Show, which led to a video I saw on YouTube… which led to this post.

We used to watch the Carol Burnett Show. Enjoyed it a lot. And, of course, when Tim Conway appeared and cracked up the cast, particularly Harvey Korman, it was very special.

But, the odd thing is, one of the funniest appearances of Tim Conway was after Harvey Korman left the show.

It was a Family sketch (The Family skits were later spun off as the show Mama’s Family) that had Eunice (Carol) on the couch, trying to talk to Mama/Thelma (Vicki Lawrence) while Mickey (Tim) wouldn’t shut up about elephants.

Conway had gone off script … something he did a lot … and kept the other actors cracking up.

My niece enjoyed it. A lot. I did, of course.

And I hope you did, too.

Saturday night, we went to the Miss Columbus pageant.

Actually, it was three pageants in one: Miss Columbus, Miss Columbus Teen, and Miss Southern Rivers Teen.

I had a family member competing in one of the teen pageants.

And, the first winner of the night was … me!

Yep, I won at the Miss Columbus pageant.

No, not on stage.

I bought some tickets for plants.

Yes, plants.

There were a couple of young ladies wearing sashes and crowns — I don’t remember what they were the reigning Queens or Little Misses for — and they were selling tickets to get to take home some of the plants used to decorate the stage. And I bought five tickets.

They drew the winning tickets, and the first number drawn was one of those tickets. Oh, and the 3rd one drawn, too.

Which meant that, after the pageant was done and we gathered everything to head home, I had to carry a couple of plants out. One was, oh, maybe 2-3 feet high. Some kind of fern or something, I don’t know. The other was a bit taller, 4-5 feet high.

When I finally got to the house … a little before 1:00 AM … I unlocked the door, reached in and turned on the light, and the cat rushed in. The Wife then entered. Then I went inside. I dropped the Mac on the couch and asked where to put the plant.

The Wife said, “Just down there,” pointing to the floor.

I took a step in that direction, then heard a sound. An unpleasant sound. A very unpleasant sound.

It was accompanied by a slight tug, and a showering of leaves.

Yes, I had walked into the ceiling fan with the plant.

The worst of it? I had, just this week, told her a story about a friend of mine who, many years ago, had accidentally cut the shafts off a car stereo. Yes, shafts. Remember those? Car stereos used to have those.

Anyway, he was working on one, and stood up. The power cord was hung on something, and he gave it a slight jerk. Only, not too slight a jerk. Because the cable easily came free from its obstruction, but the force of the upward jerking motion meant the car radio’s path went directly into the metal ceiling fan.

Trimmed off the shafts as clean as you please.

The look on his face was priceless. I laughed my butt off. Because it wasn’t my car radio.

Well, like I said, I related that story to her this week. Not sure why.

And tonight, I cut off her new plant with the ceiling fan.

Karma’s a bitch.

Missed a couple of nights in the ball park earlier this week because of a stomach flu.

Then, missed the first two games — Friday and Saturday night — for some events involving family.

The Columbus Catfish didn’t miss me a bit. They won both Friday and Saturday night, 3-2 and 11-8.

After an 8-0 road trip — and a 9-game winning streak — the Columbus Catfish have now lost three in a row.

The former tenants of Columbus’ Golden Park, the Lake County Captains (Indians) — the former Columbus RedStixx — have now won the first three games of their series, including a double header on Wednesday.

Lake County won the two games, 4-1 and 5-1, setting up a possible sweep Thursday.
